Emmadelosnardos posted an arresting recreation of Francisco Goya’s El Sueño de la Razón Produce Monstruos, and I was thrilled to discover that the photographer, Yinka Shonibare, did not only one version, but a whole series. While each of the photographs stands on its own, comparing them to the original is what really gets me dizzy.

Image sources: Goya’s original; Shonibare’s Africa, America, Asia, Australia, and Europe

Brava! I love it. Thanks for sharing this with us. I love the original Goya, as you know, and am thrilled that others are also interested in these images.

Yinka Shonibare is fucking amazing. D & I saw an exhibition of his work when we were in Sydney and it blew. my. mind.

Headless mannequins clothed in full 18th-century European costumes made up in “African” (Dutch wax-printed cotton) fabrics, and arranged in pornographic poses! It was all dreadfully exciting.

I too adore Yinka Shonibare. I’d never seen these photos before, though. I think bottom left is my favorite.

Emma…what fascinates you so much about the original etching?
